The Japanese respect the hell outta anyone who makes an effort to speak a few simple sentences. And the language has no common ground with European or other Asiatic languages. It’s a true labor of love to learn the language (especially if you are monolingual).

I won't say it was easy, but having the chance to hear and practice made it much easier. although with every language there is a challenge when you start practicing/ I remember the first time I went into a little store and asked Kore wa nan desu ka? And the woman started prattling to me and I barely understood a word. It got easier with 3-4 trips a year.
