For me it was a crystal set radio, a present I got as a kitset and had to assemble when I was 10. Many nights I would wake up being almost garotted by the earplug cords. Not a lot of station choices in those days with the heavily regulated environment. "You tell the young ones that today and they won't believe you". :-) Mostly listened to music but on Sunday nights the old version of National Radio used to broadcast audio books in serial format. For some reason I only remember one which was High Citadel by Desmond Bagley. PS. now I can fall asleep anywhere, anytime. Staying asleep is another matter!
You just reminded me of something that I listened to at night when I was supposed to be sleeping as a kid. Programs like The Goon Show and plays like Puckoon by Spike Milligan. I hear you on staying asleep. I think I may have debunked the theory of learning in your sleep. Sometimes I will wake up at 3 in the morning, having forgotten to reset the Sleep Timer on my podcasts, and 3 or 4 shows have been playing in my ear while I slept :D
That's cool, Guy. I can relate to being attacked by the radio, which sat on the windowsill above my bed. I remember listening to a jazz program by a guy called Hayden Shirley. He was very knowledgeable and had many stories to tell about the different members in the bands. I can't remember if that was a ZB or national radio station. You're right, not a lot of choices for station. We had National, Concert, ZB, ZM, I think that was about it. On the stereogram, the stations were printed on the front for tuning, when they were assembled, so there clearly wasn't any expectation that new stations would be coming.
